PressOne4Love at Crack Theatre Festival

It started as an idle conversation at The Coop, having a few beers before we officially launched Linebreak Collective with a party and showcase for the first time.

“Hey, you guys are both theatre kids, how could we combine tech with stage play in a cool way?”

Opposite me on the couch sat Joel Burrows and Disapol Savetsila, who’d been running annual play nights out of the local Pheonix Theatre for the past two years under the banner of Theatre Vs Everything. We threw around a few ideas. We all agreed that working in that space, it was hard not to introduce tech in a way that felt gimmicky, flimsy. There was the risk of throwing in tech for the sake of throwing in tech, and we didn’t like that. If we were to do it, we’d make a play where tech was at the very core of the experience. Where if you pulled the tech aspect of the play out, it’d crumble into a great big pile of nothing.

“What if we did something like… the stage equivalent of Twitch Plays Pokemon?”

When I said those words, something clicked in all of us. Something exciting began to take form. We started having meetings, defining ideas, narrowing down. We wrote the first draft of an intro scene and Blu-tacked it to the wall. When we thought we had something good enough, we pitched it to Crack Theatre Festival. And now, seven months on, we have some amazing news to announce.

THEY GODDAMN WANTED IT. WE’RE TAKING PRESSONE4LOVE TO CRACK THEATRE FESTIVAL IN NEWCASTLE!

BUT WHAT ACTUALLY IS IT?

PressOne4Love is an absurd and comedic performance where YOU – the audience – decide the outcome.

An alien research facility – staffed by YOU and other audience members – has been tasked with investigating the bizarre act of human reproduction. Your lab has developed a fully remote controlled avatar of a human male that you’ve been beaming into house parties for months, looking for a mate of compatible genital pairing to “woo”. ALAS! All of these saucy field expeditions to date have failed, and now the higher-ups are demanding results by TONIGHT or your funding’s kaput, your branch dissolved. It is up to you, intrepid researcher, to guide our avatar through the minefield of human attraction –- FOR SCIENCE!

It’s a play about romance, bad slam poetry and how to behave when the cops come knocking.

HOW WILL IT WORK?

You’ll need to bring a smart phone, laptop, etc — anything that can connect to a WiFi signal and has a web browser. Mostly you’ll be voting on our luckless protagonist’s next lines or actions, but sometimes we’ll ask you to type in responses to various situations as well.
